Vilnius Open’2011 (1st tournament of BST’2011)
The tournament is over. According response from tournament players it was total success. Thanks to every participant and organizers!
It was a second Vilnius discgolf tournament. And Vilnius Open for the first time was a part of Baltic Sea Tour. It also became a record tournament in BST history with 39 players participating!
Course layout has changed a lot since last year, thus players who new the course since 2010 had no advantage.
Vilnius Open’2011 was played from Friday to Sunday.
Friday:
It was a day of practice and doubles competition. 18 players (9 couples) played doubles – Juha and Hannu from Finland showed the best score (56, 8 under par!).
Saturday:
First round was played by mixed groups. 4 players in Open division managed to play under 70, with tremendous result from Lithuanian junior Gabrielius Gricius – 60 (-4). It got preliminary PDGA rating of 988, which probably is the best round ever played by any Baltic player. It set Gabrielius ahead from second placed Juha Nieminen (67) by 7 point immediately.
In Amateur division Lithuanian twelve years junior Pranciskus Gricius played the best (80), but was closely followed by best female Baltic players – Lithuanian Kristina Backyte (81) and Estonian Annika Proos (83).
The second round was played in more difficult windy conditions, and it was not easy to improve first round scores. Open division player Einar Elbing played steady round of 66, and used a momentum to get tied with Gabrielius Gricius, after his unsuccessful round of 74. Juha Nieminen was still only 2 points behind leaders.
Leadership in Amateurs did not change, when Pranciskus played 80 again, and he increase leadership as Kristina and Annika both played 90.
Sunday:
Leaders in MPO – Gabrielius and Einar played solid round again. Gabrielius gained 1 point leadership over Einar, by scoring 65 (Einar – 66). Leaders of Vilnius Open in 2010 tried very hard to reach the final – Tadas Uselis (LT) played 67 and Seppo Kuikka (FIN) – 65. Both played their best rounds in the tournament, and managed to reach top ranked tournment player Veli Berglund (FIN) of first group. All three players had to play sudden death competition for 2 places in the final. SD was started on uphill hole # 7 – after nice Tadas’ and Seppo’s drives Veli hit the middle of the hill and it was probably it. Seppo and Tadas scored 3, while Veli took only 5.
Amateurs division had no changes in leadership – Pranciskus Gricius finnished 1st, Krsitina Backyte managed to stay ahead of Annika Proos.
The final was played by top5 MPO players – Gabrielius Gricius (+7 before the final), Einar Elbing (+8), Juha Nieminen (+17), Tadas Uselis and Seppo Kuikka (both +18). The fight was for 1st place between Gabrielius and Einar, and the rest three were targeting 3rd position.
After Einar mistakes on holes #2 and #3, Gabrielius extended his leadership to 6 points, and it was over. Gabrielius finished almost error-less final game and comfortably won by 7 points in total. Juha Nieminem played solid too and did not allow Tadas and Seppo to reach him.
Congratulations to all winners !
